The 4th VI-grade Conference took place on October 18th-19th, 2011 in Udine, Italy.
130 engineers, managers, and simulation experts from more than 60 companies and research centers gathered from all over the world to discuss the latest simulation trends and to exchange their experience with other users of the VI-grade technology. The event, characterized by the motto “Push Your Simulation to the Next Level”, offered to the participants a very comprehensive agenda, featuring 34 presentations and 3 workshops dedicated to the latest technology in advanced system simulation in the automotive, railway and powertrain/engine industries.
"Fantastic event – thank you!" – "Outstanding mix of topics and industries." – “I spent four very good days, rich of events and discussions. See you next year!” are just some of the quotes collected from participants to the conference.
“We are extremely happy with the participation of our community to our 2011 event” said Juergen Fett, Managing Director of VI-grade GmbH. “The high number of participants from all over the world, especially in these economically challenging times, confirms once again that the strategic directions of our company are well accepted by our customers and prospects.”
“A special highlight of this year's conference has been the possibility for all participants to visit VI-SimCenter, our new technical center for driving simulator technology” said Diego Minen, Technical Director of VI-grade GmbH. “Located very close to the conference venue, the VI-SimCenter currently features four driving simulators from the VI-DriveSim product line: three static with a fixed platform and one dynamic with a moving platform.. More than 70 participants have appreciated the opportunity of trying the driving simulators during dedicated sessions in parallel to the official conference program.”
The 4th VI-grade Users Conference, sponsored by MSC.Software, FEV, Maplesoft, MIRA and SimCoVR included presentations from APPH, BMW, BMW Motorcycle, Ferrari, Fiat, Magna Steyr, Multimatic, Porsche, Tatravagonka, Volkswagen and many other commercial companies, universities, research centers and technology partners. You can download the pdf versions of most of the presentations after you register and login to this web site.

We invite you to join us for an exceptional event held at our Italian premises to discover VI-SimCenter, the new technical center for the driving simulator technology offered by VI-grade.
VI-SimCenter, that occupies an area of 250sqm, currently features three driving simulators from the VI-DriveSim product line: two static (one for racecars and one for passenger cars) with a fixed platform and one dynamic with a moving platform, the latter currently being the only prototype of this kind installed in the world.
Our long-term experience in automotive simulation, together with the highly professional engineering skills of all involved partners, make VI-SimCenter a unique solution (that can be purchased or rented by customers) for the demands of the international driving simulation scenario for professional applications of today.
Moreover, a virtual driving school is currently being launched, with the purpouse of educating the drivers on how to react to dangerous road conditions or traffic situations.
VI-grade welcomes you to the 3rd edition of the Virtual Formula competition!
Virtual Formula 2011 is built upon the rules and regulations of the popular Formula SAE and Formula Student. This year’s edition, with a particular focus on optimization, will be based on the usage of VI-Motorsport, VI-grade’s interactive simulation environment for motorsport vehicle modeling and dynamic analysis, and modeFRONTIER, the multidisciplinary and multi-objective optimization and design environment from Esteco. All registered teams will be granted access to a complete state-of-the-art racing simulation and optimization software to find the best set-up for their car.
Registrations are closed! More than 50 teams registered to the competition!

The teams will have time until Sept 15th, 2011 to submit their results to VI-grade.
The participating teams will be challenged to optimize the performance of a virtual race car, minimizing the lap time on a given autocross track. The competition will be won by the team that will drive the vehicle with the shortest lap-time on the given circuit. The winning team will receive a complete software package including multiple user access to the VI-MotorSport and modeFRONTIER technologies!
“VI-Grade Virtual Formula is a powerful educational tool to increase the knowledge of our students in vehicle dynamics”, declared Prof. Andrea Tonoli, faculty advisor of Squadra Corse Politecnico di Torino, winning team of the 2010 Virtual Formula edition. “This solution gave our students the possibility to quickly estimate the effects of such vehicle set-up parameters on car performance and lap-time and to better understand the sensitivity of parameter variation with respect to the final goal. We found this very effective not only at the design phase, but also for reducing the track test time, that is a critical issue because of the very tight timing of the project.”
“We are extremely happy about our participation as main sponsors to the Virtual Formula competition”, declared Davide Ludovisi, Communication Specialist at Esteco. “We are looking forward to sharing to the participating teams the outstanding optimization capabilities offered by our modeFRONTIER solution. We also invite all teams to register to the social network modeFrontier @ Formula SAE, a useful web environment where Formula SAE participants can share every experience linked to the design process (comments, pictures, video, etc.), and discover new ways to use modeFRONTIER for Formula SAE needs.”
